theft from a steamer. Messrs. W. Hennah and H. Seaton, Justices of the Peace, presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court held yesterday morning, and dealt with the police charges. A waterside worker (for whom Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell appeard) pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of whisky and two singlets, value 225., the property of the Shaw, Savill and! Albion Co. The accused was seen at 10 p.m. on Tuesday leaving the wharf with something concealed in his alothes. He was stopped and searched, nnd the goods were found on him. He had been working on a Shaw-Savill steamer, from which the goods were taken. Mr. Treadwell made a strong plea for leniency. Accused was fined 40s-, and was allowed a fortnight in which to pay the amount. ■ A remand to Friday was granted in the case of Alfred Rawson, who was charged with the theft of an overcoat, value £a, the property of Ida Lilian Grev. Charles Reid pleaded guilty to travelling on the s.s. Manuka between Sydney and Wellington without having paid hie fare. It was stated by Sub-Inspector Willis that Reid had been a steward on a Union Company boat, and went to Sydney, where he was stranded. He stowed away on the Manuka, and returned to New Zealand. He was without means, and had no money on him when arrested. Reid was fined 40s. For drunkenness (his fourth offence) Albert Ernest Boyson was fined 205., with the option of twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Hendry Mearns (for whom Mr. A. B. Sievwright appeared) pleaded guilty to making false declarations in respect to the births of two children. This being an indictable oflenco, the accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
