The "Allgemeine Zeitung" reports that ’Allied troops, mostly British, yesterday marched into Beuthen and were acclaimed by the populace, but when the people began to sing patriotic songs the French guard attacked them with their rifle butts. Some shots were fired afterwards by the French. The Mayor was killed, and several French soldiers were wounded. The French then got out of control and attacked the crowd. Several women and children are reported to have been killed. Twenty citizens, including the first and second burgomasters, have been arrested as hostages.—Reuter. ANOTHER VERSION OF THE AFFAIR FRENCH MAJOR SHOT BY GERMAN INHABITANTS. (Rec. July 6, 11.10 p.m.) Paris, July 5. Another report of the Beuthen incident says that while the French troops were entering the town the German inhabitants made a demonstration,_ in the course of which a French major was 'fatally shot with a revolver. The murderer escaped. Two French sergeants were slightly wounded. British and French troops dispersed the demonstrators, two of whom were killed and save nal injured.—Reuter.
