GISBORNE GAMING CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, June 2<. Mr. Justice Reed- to-day heard an appeal by Arthur Owen against his con-v-etion' bv a Magistrate on a charge of keeping a common gaming house, with a sentence of two months’ imprisonment. In his evidence to-day the chief P o lu.o witness Joseph Brown, contradicted' himself' co frequently under crossexamination by Mr. M. Myers that (Ire latter suggested to Mr. Justice I.eod that it was useless to go further. Mr. Nolan, Crown prosecutor, said lie agreed’ with this unless tho police evidence was sufficient without Brown. His Honour said that Brown’s statements were so obviously contradictory Ibtit his evidence could not bo accepteu. The appeal was allowed, and the conviction quashed.
