VOTE OF “NO CONFIDENCE” QUASHED PETONE COUNCIL V. THE MAYOR Prior to tho commencement of tho business on the order paper at last night’s meeting of the Petone Borough Council, Councillor Anderson, addressing the Mayor, said: I regret to inform you that you no longer enjoy the confidence of the council, or, at any rate, tho majority of them, and I therefore formally move a vote of no-confidence in you. , The Mayor: . Y'ou may as well understand, Councillor Anderson, that a Mayor does not usually move a vote of no-confidence in himself. The motion is out of order, Councillor C. P. Brockelbank said ho would second tho motion, as ho considered that as the motion directly affected the Mayor it would be quite possible for someone else to move it. The Mayor; You need not waste your time. . ... Councillor Anderson: Is it impossible for a vote of no-confidence to be moved in a Mayor? The Mayor: I have tho highest authority for my ruling. I will proceed with the business of .the meeting. Councillor Anderson: Is it impossible, Your Worship, to move a vote of noconfidonce in the Mayor? The Mayor: Yes. Councillor Anderson is out of order. Councillor Anderson: If notice were given, would the motion then be m order? . -iv. The Mayor saRT ne would deal with that when it was moved. Councillor Anderson: I ask for the town clerk’s ruling. The Mayor said he would rule that the town clerk was under no obligation to give a ruling on a point that was essentially within tho functions of the Mayor. "Councillor Anderson is distinctly out of order,” concluded Mr. M'Ewan. . , , , The discussion thea terminated, and the council passed on to the consideration of other business.
