The secretary of the Johnsonville Club wrote stating that owing to special circumstances the club was unable to place n team in the field last Saturday. The explanation was accepted. Tho Referees’ Association wrote complaining about insulting language having been used towards a referee by a player. There was also a complaint of young fellows, mostly under the influence of liquor, congregating around tho entrance to the referees’ and players’ rooms, and after heated argument often finishing up by fighting. It was resolved, on the motion of the ■chairman, that the letters from the Referees’ Association be sent to the police, in order that they may taka such action us may bo considered necessary, and particularly to prevent the congregation at the referees' room after tho game; also that the Referees’ Association be informed that tho room—subject to its use by the officials of the union and tho Red Cross men, is under the control of the referees. A TEAM LEAVES THE FIELD

TWO WEEKS' SUSPENSION IMPOSED.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Palmerston North, June 21.

At last night’s meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union a lengthy discussion ensued as to the penalty to be meted cut to the Kia Toa senior fifteen for walking, off the ground during the progress of their game against Jackeytown last Saturday as a protest against the rulings of the referee. Messrs. Thomas end M'Swcenoy, members of the club, attended, and pointed out that their team had for some time been opposed to tho referee appointed to conduct the game, and notwithstanding rtiis fact, he had been assigned to three of their matches running. Although the feeling against him was strong, still they were prepared to abide by his decisions provided the same were impartial and juat. They considered that he had awarded tries which should not have been given, and other of his rulings were erroneous. These factors had led to the team refusing to play on after half-time. They had requested that another referee be appointed so as to avoid trouble. After mature consideration the union decided to suspend the team for two playing Saturdays.

SCOTS COLLEGE V. PALMERSTON

HIGH SCHOOL.

By Teldgraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, June 21

The match Scots College v. Palmerston North High School arranged for showvisitors was played to-day before a very good crowd, considering it was the opening day. Unfortunately the game wns spoilt through rain falling just after the opening stages. An even break marked the beginning, the advantage ultimately resting with the Wellington team, per medium of a. cross kick by Potatau. An excellent line kick by Brophy frustrated the advantage, and Saywell set the ■ School on the attack, but good defensive work was shown by the visiting backs, Bowen 'being chiefly noticeable. The tackling at this stage was deadly, and a groat deal of advantage did not lay with etf’fer side. Ultimately Bennett made a nice opening for the home team and play was taken to the Scots’ last line of defence, and the resultant line out ended in possession going to the School, and A. Tovey made the most"of the opportunity and registered first blood. Play now became very strenuous, and a hard battle ensued. Play travelled up and down field, but at half-time no further scorb had resulted. M'Uvide with a nice movement set the visitors going just after the opening of the second half, but he was nicely accounted for by Law. Tait should have improved on the effort, but he fried to pot and spoilt an opportunity. TTie rain was now falling fairly heavily, and any attempt to handle the ball accurately was out of the question. Forward Tishes became characteristic, the home team eventually pressing the advantage, which ended in the leather going out to Saywell. who dived over and registered the second try. The kick at. goal was unsuccessful. The remainder of the game resolved l itself into attack and counter-attack, but nt the call of time no further score had been obtained, and the local team left the ground winners by 6 points to nil. Mr. Fraser carried the whistle.
