HARRIERS

On Saturday the members of the Olympic Harriers aud A.A. Club .journeyed by motor bus to Bellevue Gardens. Lower Hutt, where the Byrne Memorial FiveMilo Handicap was held. About 60 members and friends were present, and there were 33 competitors. The course, an ideal cross-country one. was laid by D. J. Alabaster, one of the founders of the club, E. A. Selman, and 0. Whittaker. From ■ Bellevue it followed White’s Line for a mile, and once over the bridge it turned to the right, over a spur of the hills on to the Bay’s Bay Hoad, then across ploughed field, interspersed with patches of gorse and some difficult fences, io the Hutt racecourse. Here it embraced the racecourse, leaving again at the north end. from where the paper kept alongside the rond to tho finish. The officials for the day were:—Starter and timekeeper, Mr. W. H. Philp; judges, Messrs. A. A. Daries and D. E. Beaglehole; handicapper. Mr. F. Hodson. From the .start, the \ limit men. Godtschalk, Moore, and Thompson set a fast pace for the first two miles. Ou the hill, however, they were overhauled by th' back-markers, whoso superior training soon told the tale. T. Wilson. Scatchard, and Griffin moved up to the front until, in the home straight, Wilson led by 200 yards from Moore, with several others well up. The finish resulted: T. Wilson (25sec.). 1: Moore (255e0.), 2; K. Griffin (20sec.), 3; W. Scatchord (scr.), 4. Time. 33min. 40sec. T. Wilson, the winner of the Edmond Cup race at. Dunedin the previous Saturday, ran phenomenally well, winning with ease, while Moore, a new runner, although treated well as regards his handicap, also ran a fine race. Afterwards everyone sat down to afternoon tea, at the invi tn t ion of the club committee. Mr. W H Philp, president, congratulated the winner. and asked Mr. Davies (chairman of the N.Z.A.A.A.) to present the cup. The Byrne Gup. a solid silver one. was presented to the club by their mates of the Divisional Signalling Company in France in memory of “Darkie.’’ Vince', and Charlie Byrne, three brothers who made the supreme sacrifice. It is competed for annually over a. five-mile course, and is held by the winner for a year. Last year’s winner was W. G. Nelson who is now in Gisborne. Mr. Davies made the presentation. a.nd also congratulated the team on their success at Dunedin He then officially, on behalf of the club, presented the T.dmond Cup to Mr. W. Scatcjiard the captain, who suitably responded. Cheers were given for the team the captain, and T. Wilson, the individual winner of both races
