MAGISTRATE’S COURT
THEFTS FROM FELLOW LODGERS. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided over n short sitting of th© Mairistrate’s Court on Saturday. A young man naned Walter Ebenezcr Flintoft, a bricklayer, who arrived in the Dominion about three months ago from Panama, pleaded guilt” to the theft of 0. watch and chain valued at £3 10s., the property of Norman W. Thomas, also to the theft of a pair of boots, valued at 305., the property of William Bennett. The accused was a fellow-lodarer nf tho complainants, and on May 20 he packed up his bag andisaid he was off to Lyttelton. He apparently went into the rooms of the other lodgers, and appropriated the articles mentioned. He was seen the next day by one of the complainants and questioned, but denied all knowledge of the thefts. Fli-ntoft was placed on probation for twelve months. A remand until this morning was granted in the case of Michael O'Brien, who was charged with the theft of a pair of boots and two pairs of socks, value 255.. the property of James Ellison. Joseph Johnston was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on being convicted for tho seventh time for drunkenness, and for tho ninth breach of hie prohibition order he was convicted ana discharged. Thomas Horrop was fined 205., with tho option of three days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness, and waa convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon for being an idle and disorderly person. llrter P. Murphy and Peter Rogan wero ea<* fined 10s., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness.
