VARIOUS RECOMMENDATIONS

TRAINING OF TEACHERS / At a sitting of the Council of Education last'week several resolutions were, carried relative to the training of teachers. H was decided that the Department be urged to arrange teachers’ refresher schools of all kinds, but with special reference to the needs of technical and manual training teAchers, and that the Department be recommended to provide boarding and to make an allowance to tenchors in regular attendance sufficient to cover travelling expenses. Tn order to secure a better supply of trained teachers in technical subjects. It was recommended that the payment of full-time student teachers in technical schools be made equal to fhaf: of probationers in primary schools, and that the payment to part-time student, teachers be considerably increased.

In view of tho announcement made by the Minister regarding the training of secondary teachers, the committee had no recommendation to make on the subject. The. council recorded its opinion that the State should train its own teachers, end with a view to ensuring this in every ca«“. it recommended that the training colleges should have correspondence branches especially for the tuition and training of nncertificated teachers.
