Mr. H. F. von Haast and Mrs. von Haast leave to-day by the Shropshire for England.

Mr. Alfred Smith, manager of the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand, will retire on pension on June 30. Mr. Smith has given forty-eight yGßrs* service to the bank, which, be joined at Wanganui in 1873. He proposes to remain a resident of Wellington.

Professor Macmillan Brown, of Christchurch, is visiting Wellington. A unanimous call from the Kent lerrace congregation to the Rev. Janies Baird, M.A., was tabled at the presbytery meeting last night by the, Rev. A. Bruce Todd. Mr. Todd said that Mr. Baird was a young minister who hod recently come from Ireland. The presbytery sustained the call, and expressed its‘gratification at the unanimity shown. The date of the induction will not be known till the Wanganui presbytery has been communicated with.

Councillor M. F. Luckie took his seat on the Victoria College Col l n " h 1 night as the representative of the Litv Council, and was welcomed by the chairman. Mr G P. H. Davidson is leaving for London by the Shropshire, and will be absent from New Zealand until about ?hcTend of toe year. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Davidson and will return via America.

Mr E. W. Kane, clerk of the House of Representatives, returned to Wellington yesterday. Air. AV. Archibald, well known in Dominion shipping circles, has re to”^ d AVellington.
