TRAMWAYS DISPUTE
A NEW DEVELOPMENT. A new development has arisen in connection with the tramwaymen’s dispute. Conferences with the tramway officers having proved abortive, the union yesterday morning filed an application with the Registrar of Industrial Unions asking that a committee be set up unde* the Labour Disputes Investigation Act of 1913 for the purpose of hearing the dispute. When an application is filet”, under this Act it is provided that the Minister of Labour shall take immediate steps fo convene a disputes committee. The report of the chairman of the committee has to be lodged with the Minister within fourteen days of the application being filed. Should, the cowuiittee fail to come to an agreement, the chairman has power io give a decision on the matter in dispute. If the oliairman’s ruling is disagreed with, the union may, after, taking a ballot, go cn strike.' provided seven days’ notice oi'tfs intention to do so is given. Similarly, employers may institute a lockout if they give the necessary seven davs’ notice.
