MANAWATU NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Palmerston North, May 31

The Manawatu Rugby Union has decided to increase the gate charges for week-end. football to one shilling. In ¥ the past the charge has been sixpence, and the attendances have been large. Whether tho change is advisable time will show.

Although the chassis for the four motor buses ordered by the Palmerston North Borough Council arrived some weeks ago, and went through, to Napier to Have the bodies put on, it was reported at the meeting of the council last night that some considerable delay would occur before they would, be ready for running. It had been understood th'at the bodies were ready, but some hitch has occurred in their construction, and it will be several weeks before they can be ready. In the meantime endeavours are being made to arrange time-tables and routes. This has been found a somewhat difficult matter, as the town is a rather difficult one to serve. A citizens' committee had the matter in hand some time ago, and sent its suggestions to the council, but on examination the scheme was found not to work out very well, and now the engineer, who has been appointed manager to the new service, has been requested to bring down a report. The installation ceremony of officers of the Manawatu Savage Club took place on Saturday night, when there were nearly a hundred members and visitors present. The installation of Chief Savage H. R. Cooper, was a most impressive and elaborate ceremony. Preceded by a number of members in Maori dress he entered the wharenui- with bis supporting officers, and was received with a haka, which was very well performed. On lacing installed he was presented with a very ancient badge of office. Savage H. L. Young was appointed deputy-chief. During the evening a canoe dance was' well performed, and some excellent vocal and instrumental items were contributed by Savages and visitors. Although in existence but a few weeks, tho membership of the club is growing so rapidly that larger premises will have to be secured for tho koreros.
