FIGURES FOR FINANCIAL YEAR. During the twelve months ended March 31 permits were issued for building work in 'Wellington to the total value of £882,203. The annual report of the Building Superintendent (Mr. R. F. Drummond) shows that altogether 845 permits were issued, as against 816 during the year 1919-20, when the estimated value of the work covered was £614,206. The permits are issued for the 'erection of new buildings and for alterations to existing buildings, and the following comparative table shows how they were distributed over the different districts:—

Some of the permits issued were for more than one building, and a big proportion of them covered alterations and additions and such small jobs as garages, stables, and sheds. Permits were issued for 343 new houses, as against 337 in the previous year. The new houses were to have been erected in the following districts:—City, 38 (34 houses were erected the previous year); Melrose, 227 (266); Northland, 13 (6); Wadestown, 29 (20); Onslow, 20 (11); Karori, 16. Thirty-five new business premises were authorised in the city district, and one warehouse in the Onslow district (an oil store at Kaiwarra). Tho buildings of note include a new Technical College, Church of England in Upland Road, three warehouses, .and two factories, besides numerous important buildings designated "ibusiness premises.”
