It is notified that tho liner Arawa. Bailing from Wellington for iSouthampton and T-nidon about July 16. will call at Monte Video instead of going via the Panama Canal. Passenger liners will follow tho Arawa at intervals and go Home via the same route. Sines the early stages ot the war and tho opening of the Panama Canal in August, 1914, very few New Zealand Btoamers have used the Homeward route via Cape Horn. In 1917 _ several steamers carrying troops took this route, but avoided making any call on the American const. The Corlnthic, which took portion of the Twenty-third Reinforcements -and left WcUington on April
2, 1917, auftl. the Devon, which left a few days later with the first half of the Twenty-fourth went well to .the southward of Cape Horn and then crossed the South Atlantic to Cape Town. Leaving Table J3<ay in a convoy escorted by n.M. auxiliary cruiser Mantua, and including the Ceramic, Nestor, Aeneas, .Antilochus. and Commonwealth, the Cortnthic and Devon proceeded to Freetown, Sierra Leone, and thence to Plynioutn, where they arrived on June 9. A WELL-FITTED BARQUE. The four-niaated barque. Alice A. Leigh, which was recently acquired by G. H. Scales, Ltd., of Wellington, and is now In Newcastle waiting to load coal for Wellington, is a particularly well-found veasel, according to the Sydney ‘■■Shipping List.” She is a steel barque, with an official tonnage of 2999 and 2817 net. and was built in 1889 by the Whitehaven Ship Building Co.. Ltd. She ia 309.6 ft. long, 46.1 ft. beam, and 25.2 ft. depth. The fittings of the noop are of a type seldom seen in windjammers. The saloon is panelled with veneered wood, with magnificent graining. Tho master’s ouartore are also elaborately fitted. The bathroom contains a norcelain enamelled bath and wash basin. A spacious wardrobe is also provided. Modern science has intruded, however, among the standard fittings of the slip. High iw above, the maze of double line of wirclesr. antennae extending along the three after "sticks. ’’ The wireless cabin is unusually spacious, and. when fully completed, will be a comfortable apartment. Another modern improvement will eventually be installed in the Alice A. Leigh, in the form of a Delco electric lighting Bystem. The trannmitting and receiving instruments of the radio set are ♦o.mnactly arranged in a water-tight cabinet. The equipment comprises a- standard set supplied by Amalgamated Wireless (Aust..), Ltd. The transmitting' set. which X of the half kilowatt tyne, is on the quenched spark system a.nd tho receiving set is or the one-valve amplified kind. A compact oil engine drives a dynamo for charging the accumulators. Tn this unit, the dynamo nets as a- motor until tho engine etarts firing and this eliminates cumbersome starting apparatus. Radio-officer Wright is in charge of the wireless airanaements which are now nearing completion. Captain Kennedy ia master of the Alice -A. Leigh, and has been trading in and out of Port Jackson for many years.

FROM NAPIER. The P-srt. Caroline left Napier at 1.30 n m. yesterday for Wellington, and is due here to-day. After loading here she will sail about June 8 for Sydney to complete Homeward loading in Australia. The Port Darwin left Napier at noon yesterday and is also due hero to-day. Some j’ears ago he was In command of the whaling baroue Costa Rica Packet, which, while off one of tho islands of the Malay Archipelago, on a whaling cruise, was seized, and the captain placed under arrest, and sentenced to imprisonment. Several weeks -later the British Consul intervened, and the captain was released: but the. whaling neat-on was lost. Subsequently. Captain Carpenter was awarded heavy damages against the Dutch Government for wrongful arrest. . . , „ Mr. IV. Shakespeare has joined the Jnapourika as third mate. Mr. W. H.
