In the suburb of Tophane of Constantinople there lives what must ba the oldest man in the world, if there is any truth in the claims of those who know his history. This is Torah, a Kurd, who is reputed to have been born 150 years ago. Far hack, almost beyond living memory. Torah, as an old man, used to be a hamal, or porter, but he retired from hard work 70 or 80 years ago. and has been supported ever since hy public bounty. The Turkish Senate last year voted a special allowance to this hypercentenarian. If reports in the local 'Press can tie believed, Torah, although infirm, is by no means worn out, aud betrays an astonishing appetite for sweetmeats. His memory, however, is not too reliable, and he is apt. to got confused among the centuries which Ins life has spanned.
