NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY TEAM DEFEATED BY METROPOLITAN‘S FIFTEEN Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright,: (Rec. May 26, 0.10 a.m.) Sydney, May 25. A metropolitan fifteen defeated the New Zealand "University Rugby team by 31 points to 17, in a keenly-fought contest, which fluctuated _ considerably from, the kick-off to full time. Neither side displayed combination. Whilst the Blacks had hardly shaken off the effects of the sea voyage, the latter’s threequarters several times gave glimpses of brilliant, nippy passing, but they did not receive sufficient support from the' vanguard to ensure success. Harty -drew first blood with a penalty goal, Nothling responding with a similar score. —Three all. A. Jackson put New Zealand again ahead, but Carr, the New South Wales champion sprinter, equalised with a Brilliant try, which Nothling converted. A try by Lane made' the scores 11—6 in favour of the Metro-, politans. The same player crossed the line again, making the ‘locals’ score 14, to which Craven replied with a try, Harty converting. At half-time the scores were: Metropolitans, 14; New Zealanders, 11. Lane was awarded a penaltytry in the second half. Elliott, Hum-, plireys, Carr, and Davis also registered three pointe each, Humphreys converting one try. Wiseman scored two tries for the Blacks.—Press Assn.
