FIRE AT ASHHURST
RETURNED SOLDIER A HEAVY
LOSER.
’From Our Own Correspondent.’ Palmerston North, May 25. Shortly after midnight yesterday the store and premises of Mr. R. Smart at Ashhurst were totally destroyed by fire. The building consisted of seven rooms and a shop wita an office attached, which was occupied by Mr. 5”. A. Hardie. The outbreak is believed to have been caused by a defective chimney in the diningroom. When discovered, the flames had obtained such a hold that Mr. and Mrs. Smart with their infant had considerable difficulty in making fheir escape. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. Smart, who is a returned soldier who had recently acquired the business, and he is a heavy loser as he was carrying a big stock of general merchandise. The insurance on the stock and fittings is £7OO, while there is a policy on the furniture of <£2so, the building being covered by an Insurance of .£7OO. Mr. Hardie had an insurance of -CSO upon his office furniture and fittings, but he will be a heavy loser, as the books of various concerns in which he is engaged were lost.
