STEAMER ATUA STRIKES ROCK
BEACHED SAFELY ON PACIFIC
ISLAND.
The Secretary (Mr. R. B. Morris) of the General Post Office has received the following report from the Auckland radio station: — "The Union Steam Ship Company s Niagara reports having received messages to the effect that the s.s. Atua struck a rock off Navua at 5.30 p ; m. today, and was being beached at Naitonitoiii, and that the passengers would bo all right.” A later message slated that rhe ship was safely beached. [The Atua left Sydney on May 12 for I.autoka to load sugar. She was probably 'hound from Lautoka to Suva and Auckland when the mishap occurred. The Atua is a steel twin screw vessel of 3414 tons gross and 1895 tons not. She has two decks and was built in 1966 by D. J. Dunlop and Co., of Glasgow. Site is 319.8 feet long. 41.22 feet broad, anil 27.3 feet in depth.] (Rec. May 21, 11.10 p.m.; Suva, May 24.
