(Rec. May 24, 8.5 p.m.)
London, May 23
The strike outlook is described as hopeful, as the miners’ leaders are indulging in friendly conversations with unofficial mine owners, who desire to reach a settlement. The chief basis of the optimism is tho belief that the miners are willing to drop the demand for a national pool. Several important unions have intimated that they cannot longer support the miners, as their funds are running out and they cannot pay their own unemployed members. Meanwhile tho public are submitting almost without complaint to further restrictions on travel, fuel, and light supplies.—United Service. A NEW DIFFICULTY DELAY IN SETTLEMENT LIKELY. (Rec. May 25, 1.20 a.m.) London, May 23. A new difficulty has arisen that is likely to delay a settlement of the strike. Tho owners and the Government require an assurance that the pool will be abandoned. The miners, however, are only prepared lo depart from the pool on tho understanding that a new plan for dealing with tho coal mines as a national unit is produced as an alternative. No plan providing for a standard wage for all mine workers has been' accepted by the owners or agreed upon in principle by the Government. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. /
