WORK AND WAGES
AMERICAN DEVELOPMENTS 1 CAPITULATION OF STRIKING SEAMEN OWNERS WILL SIGN NO MORE AGREEMENTS By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright (Rec. May 19, 9.40 p.m.) New York, May 19. The Steamship Owners’ Association has decided to sign no more agreements with seagoing Labour organisations. This means that the unions will not be consulted regarding wages and working conditions. Labour regards this move as a repudiation of the principle of collective bargaining. After an all-day conference at Washington, representatives of the seamen who are on strike authorised the Secretary of Labour, Mr. Davis, to reach a settlement on their behalf with the owners and accept such reductions as he , deems proper.—Aus.-N.Z. RAILWAY WORKERS’ WAGES
DOWNWARD READJUSTMENT. (Rec. May 19, 9.40 p.m.) Washington, May 19.
One million unskilled railway workers are affected by the Railway Labour Board's decision that the prevailing conditions justify, to an extent yet to be determined, a downward readjustment of the wages of carriers’ employees. The workers propose to demand that the Court review its decision. Labour leaders held conferences last night, and found precedents for such action, which will, however, be delayed until the board announces the reductions on .Tune 1. Great delay will follow the review, and in the meanwhile the railways intend to make the reduction apply also to skilled workers.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
