PASSENGER DETAINED ON STEAMER. (Rec. May 10. 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, May 9. E. Newton, a native of Dunedin, was detained by the Customs officers on the Riverine when she arrived from Auckland to-day. He has been aboard since the vessel left for Auckland, where he was not permitted to land as he refused to take the oath of allegiance, which lie contends was introduced during h’s absence from New Zealand. He denies that he is disloyal, but states that his conscience will not permit him to take the oath, cither lier-e or in New Zealand. —Press Assn.
