AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS IN ENGLAND
COMMENT ON THE PLAY. London, May 8. Mr. P. Warner, writing in the “Mornin" Post," says: ‘/The spectators at the Surrey match were singularly apathetic. They applauded Macartney and Collins at the conclusion of their innings, but there was little applause during the play. But the day was cheerless. Macartney was confidence personified. His square late cuts were superb. Collins is not stylish but is a remarkably good bats-man-an ideal first man.” Warner predicts that Collins will make many runs on this tour. With the exception of Reay Surrey’s howling was commonplace. “The Times” cricket correspondent writes: “The decision to play Australian hours caused strong comment. The Australians have, perhaps, a too severe tour, and short hours are necessary, but only fifteen hours’ actual play in three days is insufficient for the public, who pay, and are entitled to consideration. It may be possible to finish matches in tho vet season, but. unless Mailey proves unplayable, the dry season will mean many drawn games with the concomitant want of interest and disappointing everybody.’ —Aus.-N.Z.
