THE PUBLIC SERVICE
—4ANNUAL MEETING OF LOCAL ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Wellington •ection of the Public Service Association was held on Tuesday night in the Accountants’ Chambers. Mr. J. J. Furlong, chairman of the section committee, presided. There were about thirty-five members present. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman urged members to assist and support the executive and section committee in. their efforts for the benefit of the members of the Public Service. A lengthy discussion ensued on the position of the section, and the president of the association (Mr. W. M. Wright) explained the association’s policy in regard to several matters of interest that had been raised by several speakers. He urged that the time had arrived when the section should be recognised and placed in a sounder position. There were a number of membws rf the Public Service who were still outside the-association, and he urged that a great effort should be made io induce them to join up. The real strength of the organisation lay in the fact that the executive' officers had the support and backing of the great majority, if not of the whole of the service. and he strongly advised the new •ection committee to consider the advisability of reorganising the section. It wa’ eventually decided to recommend the incoming section committee to take etops in accordance with the recommendation of the executive committee. The following resolution was also carried: "That in the opinion of this meeting the scale of salaried for the professional division should be amended, so'as to provide that the yearly increments should be at least as great as provided in the amended scale of the clerical division." Mr. Wright moved a hearty vote of thanks to the outgoing section committee for their efforts on behalf of the association during the past year. The vote was carried by acclamation.
