FIRE AT MASTERTON
A HOUSE GUTTED. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Masterton, April *-0About 2 o’clock this morning a fire occurred at a house near the Bridge, Masterton, owned by the A\aira rapa Farmers' Cooperative and rented by Mr. H. Baker Mr. Bak<r was absent at the time on a holiday, and the occupants of the house were Mrs. Baker and her two children, and Mrs. Wilson, an invalid. . Mrs. Baker heard an explosion, appa - entlv caused by ga» in the kitchen, and this" was followed by flashes and smoko. Tim brigade was. quickly on tie scene, but the house, which is built of totara, burned fiercely, and was gutted. The house, which was valued at £4. . was insured in the South British office for £2OO, while the furniture of Mi. and Mns Baker, which is estimated by Mrs. Baker to have been worth £3OO, was insured in the Standard office for £2w.
