Mr Robert Duncan (Secretary of Marine), Mr. F. W. Furkert (Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department) and Mr. E. E. The Hon. D. T. lleming ’has .again been nominated by the Otago Education Board to represent. Otago on the Council of Education, states a Press Association message from Blunedia. Mr. A. T. Donnelly (states a Press Association message from Christchurch) has been appointed Crown Solicitor for Canterbury in succession to Mr. S. G. Raymond, who resigned and is leaving for England.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland states:—A public reception was given in the City Council Chamber to Dr. T. W. Leys, in recognition of has services to the city in connection with tho University Art Gallery, the Leys Institute, the Public Library, and other civic 'institutions. The Mayor congratulated Dr. Leys on having the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws conferred on him by a great Canadian University, the M’Gill, and conveyed an expression of tho citizens’ appreciation for the signal service he had rendered the city of Auckland. After speeches by representatives of various institutions, Dr. Leys replied, making special reference to the great benefit which Auckland derived from the patriotism and munificent bequests of present and former citizens. Major A. A. M'Nab. D. 5.0., lias returned to New Zealand. He was four years on active service in Samoa, Egypt, and France, was severely gassed in France, and also lost an arm. After being thus incapacitated he entereel Christ’s College, Cambridge, and has spent the last three years there, taking his arts degree and the LL.B. He was later called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn.
Mr. H. M. Campbell, M.P., accompanied by Mrs. Campbell and Miss Irene Chambers, of Mokopeka, will leave for Sydney by the Moeraki to-day. They proceed thence by the P. and 0. liner Morea, via Suez, to London.
The Government has reappointed Mr. W. H. P. Barber a membar of thy Wellington College Board of GorefiiorA.
Mr. John Stockman, of Napier, was yesterday admitted a solicitor of the Supremo Court, by His Honour. Mr. Justice Reed.
Mr. Dick Arnst, the sculler, who has been on a visit to the south, returned to Wellington yesterday morning. Ha left for Pieton by the Arahura last night en route to Blenheim.
The Minister of Justice (Hon. E. Leo) inspected the prison camp at Waircarino yesterday. He lias arranged to inspect the prison farm at Rotorua and other institutions in the northern districts before lie returns to Wellington early next week.

The appointment of Miss Ley as lecturer in ’homo science at tho Wellington Training College has been approved by the Education Department.
A Press Association message from Grey- . mouth states that Mr. John Wallace, M.A., editor of the “Grey Star,” died last night, aged 46. Thq deceased was one of the leading West Coast pressmen for twenty years, and formerly edited the “Argus.” He was a native of Dhinodin, and leaves a widow and two children. The late Mr. Wallace was a ready writer and a prominent boxing patron. Mr. J. S. Douglas, who was elected unopposed as Mayor of Dunedin, was born in that city in 1872. He was a member of fno Dunedin City Guards until the close of the Volunteer system, and received all efficiency medals, including the officers’ decoration. At the inaugural tion of the Territorials he was appointed major, and was transferred from the reserve under fhe new regulations in 1920, to the retired list. He had a total continuous military service of thirty-one years. He was president of the Dunedin Employers’ Plumbers’ Union for over fifteen years, and was appointed by the Minister of Public Health a member of the Plumbers’ Registration Board of New Zealand in 1913. He has since been reappointed on two occasions. He was for, some veal's chairman of the Dunedin Drainage Board, and was elected a member of the City Council in 1913, and for the last two years has been chairman of the Tramway Committee. He has also been a member of the Otago _ Harbour Board and the Dunedin Licensing Committee. The last occasion on which there was a walk-over for. the Mayoralty of Dunedin was in 1912.
