HARBOUR BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The final meeting of the Harbour Board as at present' constituted was held last night. Mr. J. G. Harkness presided. The chairman reported that Messrs, i C. E. Daniell and T. Moss had been rcI turned unopposed to represent the comHiined district of Wairnrapa; Messrs. J. 1 G. Cobbe and M. Cohen to represent the I combined district, of Manawatu; and Messrs. C. M'Arthur and C. AL Turrell I to represent payers of Harbour dues on I ships. Of the six members elected unopposed. Air. T. Mo c s was the only new member. He takes the place of Mr. A. D. M'Leod, ALP., who did not seek re-election. The chairman congratulated the old members who had been re-elected and welcomed Mr. Aloss. It was decided, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Air. Daniell, that the board place on record its appreciation of the cervices rendered by Mr, A. D. M'Leod during the two years he had been a member of the hoard. The bank pass-book showed current account credit balance, <938,317 Ifs. 2d.: imprest account, credit balance. .£3226 2s. Id.: and fixed deposits, .£130,000. Air. C. n. Chapman pointed out that the Central Progress League had asked for figures in connection ith the casual labour employed by the board, and he suggested that in supplying the figures some explanation should be given with, respect to the shortage of trucks as affecting the costs. The chairman replied that the figures given to the Progress Teague were the same as those presented to the tom rd by th® secretary, and the question of shortage of trucks was not involved. The figures referred wholly to general cargo. The engineer was authorised tn purchase four shop mules and to make 50 extra trailers, as soon as possible. The engineer’s report as to the advisability of ordering additional motor tractors was adopted Air. Chapman asked whether the board had a sufficient stock of con] to carry on in view of the possibilities of the immediate future. , The chairman stated that the board bad not the space for any large quantity of ooal, but it had about 150 tons at present. Air. Chapman suggested that they should get as much coal as possible even if it had to to stored somewhere else.
The ehairman said the board could rely on the engineer giving his attention to the matter.
