INDIAN UNREST

PROPOSAL TO SUSPEND NON-CO-OPERATION OPPOSED BY GANDHI (ByTelegraph-Press Aesoclation-Oopyrleht (Rec. April 16, 5.5 p.m.) Delhi, April 15. Replying to Raza Ali’s suggestion for tho suspension of non-co-operation to give Lord Reading (Viceroy) a chance, Gandhi, the Indian agitator, writes: "Nothing in the atmosphere prevents a study of tho situation. What disturbance exists is either fomented by tho authorities or the situation is so mis? handled as to give rise to bloodshed. Ah should address his appeal to the officials who are provoking the people, even if he wished to suspend the movement adopted by the nation through its representlive assemblies. Does Ali moan by the suspension of non-co-operation that titleholders temporarily recall their titles, lawyers resume their practice, boys return to the Government schools, spinners discard spinning wheels, and tho national schools close their doors? Ali doos not understand the scope of non-co-opcration; he does not realise its like virtue, whose practice cannot be suspended at will even when the Caliphate is fully protected and the Punjab wound-healed, lhe drink revenue cannot be revived, nor tne use of foreign cloth resumed.’ Tho letter well illustrates the extremist activities, and apparently admits that lhe movement has passed beyond Gandhis control. —Aus.-N.Z.
