The American five-masted wooden schooner Columbia River arrived at Port Chalmers on Tuesday with 1776 tons of Newcastle coal for the city gas The Columbia River, which has mada several voyages to. Australian ports came from Port Elizabeth this trip to load at Newcastle for Port Chalmers, states the “Otago Daily Times. The trip across, the Tasman Sea was made trying by gales and heavy seas being, interspersed with calms and baffling moderate winds. She left Newcastle on, March 22 with a high barometer and a fair wind, which enabled the schooner to log 105 miles for the day’s run. This, promising start lasted only until the evening, however, when the wind went down and a nasty, confused sea further hindered headway. Next day a gentle breeze, which fell away to a calm at night, reduced the progress to 10 miles for the 24 hours. The weather was threatening on the Uiird day out, 55 miles being logged. On the fourth day the wind shifted from S.W. to S.S.W., and terrific squalls had the schooner at their mercy, four sails being blown away. The log registered 132 miles that day. but the following day only 57 miles were sailed. The weather then moderated temporarily, f;he wind varying from E.S.E. to E. for a day. and then blowing moderate to fresh from N.E. On the 2nd inst. the weather was very, unsettled. The wind kept hauling round from S.W. to E.N.E.. and one day it blew from every point of the. compass with heavy drizzling rain. yhen the West Ca.pe was sighted on April 7 a heavy southerly swell was causing the vescaP to strain heavily, the wind being too light to keep the vessel steady. The wind then came away a good breeze from the west, and Captain Murchison ran into Foveanx Strait- last Friday. The weather again proved treacherous, the glass falling to 7.9.50. A heavy beam sea rolled up, followed by a south-west buster, which compelled the captain to heave-to, tffie decks being contmuallly swept bv heavy water which made pumping impossible. At 7 o’clock on Bundsw morning the weather Moderated a little sail was mad«\ and the Columbia Rivor cleared, the Strait in a smother of westerly rain so nails. On Monday terrine hail squalls were encountered, the wind chopping round from north to south embarrassingly. Captain Neil Murchison has commanded the Columbia River since rite was launched -five yearn ago. After diflcharginer she will probably dock at Port Chalmers before returning to New* castle.
