SWIMMING
LUDY LANGER TO APPEAR TONIGHT. Through the enterprise of the Wellington Swimming Centre, .the public will have an opportunity to-night .and on Saturday night of seeing ’in action the famous distance champion swimmer, Ludy Langer, who was the American distance representative at the Olympic Games last year, and who carried all before him. To-night at the Tepid Baths he iA to start in two first-class handicaps —lsoyds. >nnd 220yds.—in which -he -will 'be opposed by the best of Wellington's swimmers. Paterson, the local champion and New Zealand record holder, who put up a very fust trial this week, is Itack to his old form, ahd Gie races each evening should be well worth seeing. Others to oppose Langer are Edwards (Maranni), Voitch (Wanganui;, Pocock- (Napier), M'Gill (Lyall Bay), and Claridge (Lyall Bay), so that, to win, Langer will need to extend himself. In Australia recently Langer created five new records, and in Auckland last week he started in four events over distances from 100yds. to 500 metres, ami won all, defeating Kronfe.lt, Cunnold, ami Murrell, in th© first flight of New Zealand’s swimmers. Th addition to Langer s swimming, W. Hicks, tho local diving champion, will give an exhibition. I,anger will be accorded a civic recep-. tion at the Town Hall at 12.15 p.m. today and the Swimming Centre extends an invitation to other athletic bodies to be present. The American Consul will bo present.
