MANAWATU RACES

CONCLUDING DAY STAKES WON BY THE HAWK ROUEN’S LONGBURN HANDICAP By Telegraph—Special Reporter. Palmerston North, April 14. Glorious weather prevailed for the con. eluding day of the Manawatu Meeting. There was a large attendance of the public. The Hawk further complicated the 2-year-old form by scoring a runaway victory in the 'Manawatu Stakes. There was no pace on in the first two furlongs, and then K. Reed on the leader put a break on tho others, which they were unable to reduce. The consistent Rouen won the big handicap in impressive style, Kilrush and Vagabond failing badly. The totalise tor handled the sum of <£•1(1,634, making a total of £88,713 for the meeting, aa against £83,927 last year THE RACING DESCRIBED. Achilleon was taken out of the Ava Handicap .(apprentice riders); Equitable was a good favourite, with Warrawee. Spare Moments and Halcyon preferred in that order. A beautiful dispatch was made in front of the stand, and Spare Moments, Earthshine, and Equitable were prominent going down tho back. At the half-mile Equitable got on to another horse’s heels and came down. Beloved then moved up and head" ed Spare Moments as they came into the straight. Over the last furlong Halcyon finished fast and won by a length fiom Belove'd, with Mokattam well up. Spare Moments and Warrawee were the next to finish.

Lord Nagar, Omahu, Maniahera and Fisher was the. order of favouritism io the Kairanga Hurdles, for which all the acceptors started After the jump away Sir Roseberry and Whetoki sorted themselves out and led at a fast pace from Maraetotara, Lord Nagar and Fisher. With half a mile to go the favourite rushed to the front and at the last fence he was challenged by Fisher. The pair left the field, and in a ding dong finish Lord Nagar won by a neck. Maraetotara was five length's away. Kenopiiru was fourth. Handy, Verbosity and Mustard Rot was the way the public fancied them in the Welter, for which Waimatoa, Halifax and Borealis declined their engagements. 'Ther-j was a long delay at the harried, and when hey jumped off Handy got the worst of it. Mustard Pot was in the van when they settled down, and was followed by Automoana and a bunched field. Rounding the bend Bonnie Briar, Verbosity and Simonides were prominent, and in the straight Bonnie Briar Tan into second place, but could not reach Mustard Pot, who won by a length. Simonides was a neck away, and then came Rose Wreath, Verbosity, and Autombana. Silver Link, Absurdum, and Tho Hawk was (he order of favouritism in the Stakes, tho only, other runners being Raccful and Soldiers’ Love. Tho race needs little description, for The Hawk took charge at the start, and, followed, by Silver Link and Absurdum, ho led tho whole way, winning comfortably by a couple of lengths. There was the same distance between second and third. Soldiers’ Love and Sleeping ’Beauty were scratched for the Cloverlea Nursery, and Thespian was made a good favourite, with Prince Ferouz and Comic in that order. The two wore prominent all tho way, and after a ding-dong finish Prince Ferouz won by a head from Thespian, with Kilreid two lengths away. Coniic was fourth. The fifteen carded loft the birdcage to dispute the Longburn Handicap, for which Kilrush was a firm favourite. The best-backed of the others were Rouen, Vagabond, and Paoanui. From an even dispatch Malaga rushed to the head of affairs, with Askari, Idle Talk, Rude, Matatua, and Rouen all in close attendance. Vagabond and Paoanui, together, being last. Entering the back stretch, Malaga was still bowling along in front from Askari, Rude, Matatua, Rouen, with Nobleman and Insurrection at the head of the next lot. There was no change till three furlongs from home, whoro Askari cried enough. Here Vagabond and Insurrection made a forward move. Once the straight was reached Malaga commenced to tire'. Rouen rushed to the front, with Rude and Matatua in hot pursuit. In the run home Rouen won comfortably by over a length from Rude, who had an advantage of half a length as the judge’s box was reached. Tairawhiti was solidly backed for the Adderston Welter, Super Six, Makere, and I-ord Mnskory being the most fancied of tho remainder. Bonibrook was the quickest to begin, and raced along the back just clear of Melting Moment nnd Super Six, with Makere, Tairawhiti, Amber Tips, and Lord Muskery all handy. Melting Moment was the first beaten, and Super Six compounded. Turning for home, Bonibrook was first in line for the judge, but down the running Tairawhiti and Amber Tips came very fast and headed Bonibrook, Tairawhiti finishing up a good winner. Makere was fourth.

There was big money for Bindle, Listowel, and Parisian Diamond in the Borough Handicap. Listowel got sent back at the start, and was well in the ruck when the field was a furlong on the journey. At this stage Golden Bubble was showing the way to Parisian Diamond, Murihiku, Bindle, and Birkie, with Tigritiya and Nursing Sister at the head of the Others. Golden Bubble was still in charge at the entrance to the straight, where Bindle came through the field, swung wide, and Listowel, who was a long way back at tho turn, swooped down on the rails, and, finishing very fast, managed to get up in time to gather the money from Golden Bubble, on whose quarters finished Birkie, kindle. Nursing Sister, then Parisian Diamond and Tigritiya. DETAILED RESULTS. By Teiecraph.—Press Association. AVA HACK HANDICAP,, of 300 sovs. One mile and 55 yards. Halcyon, 7st. 101 b (A.
