100 BOOTHS TO EMPLOY 250 PEOPLE A COSTLY BUSINESS The municipal elections whioh are to take place on Wednesday, April 27, will entail a good deal of work as far as the Chief Returning Officer (Mr. James Amos) is concerned. With the electoral roll out of the way, he has to make all the 'arrangements for taking the ballot. On the present occasion the Chief Returning Officer’s field of activity has been considerably enlarged by the amalgamation with the city since the lass election of Karori and Miramar. Polling places have to be secured in suitable buildings nearest the most populated parts of the suburbs, and also in the city—both in the business and residential areas.

'On this occasion there will be no fewer than 39 polling places—the largest number on record —with 100 booths. As two clerks are located in each booth, this will mean the employment of 200 clerks and about 50 doorkeepers. This will entail a very considerable cost to the city. It not only means fees for the clerks and door-keepers, but there is the rant of a majority of the polling places, the heavy cost of the compilation nnd printing of the rolls, the cost of printing the fouf ballot papers, and advertisements, etc. The chief returning officer has fixed on the following sites for polling places:— Alexandra Hall, Abel-Smiflh Street.
