RETURNED SOLDIERS
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent Mastenton, April 14. The fifth annual meeting of the Wai’rarapa Returned Soldiers' Association was hold to-night, Mr. J. A. Cowles presiding. There was a large attendance. In moving the adoption of tho annual the chairman stated that the amount of outstanding subscriptions, .£194, was smaller than that of any other association in Now Zealand. The report and the balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of Jll5O, were adopted. 1 It was moved by Mr. Cowles that tho association'cannot vote any money towards the upkeep of the Soldiers’ Club. The resolution was carried. Mr. R.' F- R. Beetham was appointed delegate to the conference of Wellington district provincial associations at Palmerston North.
The following remits to the conference were carried : “That the Government be urged to enforce the compulsory clauses of the Finance. Act in order to provide money to complete the settlement of soldiers on the land"; "that this meeting urges the Government to take a more liberal view ot the definition of the jvord 'repatriation’ so far as it relates to the Repatriation Department, and that it should be treated ns the word was defin- , ed two years ago”; "that the Govern- | ment be urged to propound and promptly j put into operation a scheme for more expeditiously (1) enabling the granting and payment of loans to soldiers for the purposes of purchasing residential sites and erecting dwellings thereon, and (2) dealing with applications and making the payment of loans for the purchase of , stock, implements, etc.” It was resolved that a letter of thanks bo sent to Mr. Ncrman James for audit- : ing the association's accounts during the ; past yiar. | The following officers were elected:—] President, Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A.; vice- 1 president, Dr. N. H. Prior; hon. trees- : urer. Air. J. Millar; hon. auditor, Mr. ■ N. H. James; committee, Messrs. R. S. Halliwell, K. M. Baird, J. D. Hutchinson. G. Hood, W. S. Brown, A. H. Devonport, A. G. Dawson, T. Jordon, R. F. R. | Beothain. i A vote of thanks was passed to the
late president, Mr. J. A. Cowles, for hie work during the past t.hreo years.
