PROGRESS LEAGUE’S VIEWS. i Wellington’’ new railway station, which Is still n thins? of the future is mentioned in the annual asport of the Contra! Progress League. “The geographical situation of Wellington, the fact that it is the seat of Government, and has a fine natural harbour, destines our city to always bo the leading business and commercial centre of' the Dominion, .and cur own neglect alone can lose us this position.’’ the report states. “There arc three essentials to success: (D A good harbour; (2)’ up-to-date facilities for handling our goods and produce from and to the rn.ilwnv and'wharf; (3) a flat and economical outlet by rail and a good road to the eonntrv behind us. With these facilities AVellington within the next few years, should have made wonderful progress. "An agreement is being drawn up specifying the rights and responsibilities of the Bailway Department the Hnrfiour Board, and- the City Council in the retaining wall and reclamation at Wellington. The reclamation, running from the end of the present wall at the extension of .Waterloo Quay to Kaiwarra. will reclaim about slxtv acres of land, on which the'railway vard will be constructed. This will relieve the present congestion and allow the T.nmbton station site tn be handed over for the erection of a new station for our cite. ft will also give the Harbour Board over 2700 feet of new wharf, with al! the latest facilities between shin and railway for handling goods. It will 1y seen, therefore, that the progress of our city awaits the construction, ao far as railways are concerned, of the retaining wall and reclamation work. "A temporary wooden structure could be built to Serve for a station until the time was ont.orfnne tn go on with the jerrnanent building. But wc do demand, ffiw the convenience of the people, that nr! trains bp fun in the now station site at the earliest possible moment.”
