HARBOUR BOARD
THE COMING ELECTION.
The Wellington Harbour Board consists of fourteen members. These are returned as follows: —By the electors of the city of Wellington, four; by the electors of the Hutt and Makara Counties, two; by the electors of the Manawatu district, two; by the electors of the Wnirarapa district, two; by the payers of harbour dues on ships, two; bv the payers of harbour dues other than on ships, one; appointed by the Government, one. Tho nominations for those returnable by the electors of Wellington will close on Monday next; for those returnable by the electors of other districts on the same date as nominations for the municipal elections close; for these returnable by payers of dues on Wednesday next.
There will be an election on this occasion, not only for the city members, hut one in connection with (he pavers of dues other than -on ships, as the candidatures of Messrs. R. E. Sinclair and J. .B. Mac Ewen have already been announced.
An election is also assured nt the Hutt and Makara. as Messrs. J. W. M'Ewan. M. AV. Welch, and W. Cotton have intimated their intention of standing.
Il is understood that the payers of dues on ships will again nominate Captain C. M'Arthur and Mr. C. M. Turrell.
Messrs. C. E. Daniell and T. Mnss will probably he returned unopposed for the Wnirarnpa, and so far as is known Messrs. M. Cohen and J. G. Cobbe will probably be returned unopposed for the Mhnawatu.
Mr. J. G. Harkness (the present chairman) was nominated a member by the Government for'three years from April, 1920.
A numerous deputation, including Messrs. TV. Cable. C. M. Luke, L. M'Kenzie. Stuart .Wilson, Dunbar Sloane, P. C. Watt.. W. Cable, jun., and W. F. Cuthbertson, waited on Mr. G. Mi'ehell. M.P., yesterday morning, and asked him to allow himself to be nominated for a seat on the Harbour Board. Mr. C. M. Luke remarked that Mr. Mitchel] had displayed splendid qualities, both on the battlefield and in public life, ami'his record fully entitled o'm to arv other position which it was in their nower to offer. Mr. W. Cable said that in retiring he was, if Mr. Mitchell was elected, making room for a better man. Other speakers referred to the straightforward and courageous manner in which Mr. Mitchell had dealt with public matters. Tn replying, Mr. Mitchell thanked Mr. C. M. Luke for the assistance he had given him in public affairs, and said he would consent to be nominated providing he could ho convinced in his own mind that he could be of assistance to the city in the posi’ion along with his' present duties. The deputation thanked Mr. Mitchell very heartily for agreeing to its request.
