DAVIS CUP
INTEREST IN AUSTRALIA’S SELECTION
CHANCE FOR YOUNG PLAYERS ©y Ttlsgraph-Prees Assonlstlon-Oonyrlrlii (Rec. April 12, 11 p.m.) London, April 11. Lawn tennis circles are interested in Australia’s selection of young players. Though some of those selected aro not well known in England, tho general opinion is that the selection may safely be left to Brookes.
Air. Scrivener, tho well-known writer and handicapper, interviewed, said there was a lot of talk about the appointment of old players. The Selection. Committee’s duty was to find tho best men available. If there was a doubt about two people, preference should always be given to the younger, with a view to looking to the future. Though not certain that these four are the best available, ho relied ou Mr. Brookes’s judgment. Mr. Scrivener said’ it was conceivable that Lycett could bo selected, but he did not think the Davis Cup should be used as a training ground. Air. Ritchie stated: "Brookes knows what ho is doing. The international team should be the beat, irrespective of age.” He favoured youth being given a chance.-
Air. Lycott considers the selections capital. "These trips will give the young men experience. England has no man. like Hawkes.” Mr. F. M. B. Fisher said he was delighted at the selections. It was a refreshing example for tho British selectors. "It is pathetic and unfortunate that England, despite tho fact that she has the finest universities and public schools in the world, sees the great event taken away year after year. In England young men aro given a chance in every sport except tennis. It is wonderful that Ritchie, at the age of .51, should still bo in tho forefront. It is more wonderful that of tens of thousands of tennis players in England none are getting an opportunity of becoming great.";— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
