WELLINGTON PRESBYTERY
MONTHLY MEETING. Tho Wellington Presbytery held its monthly meeting last night. The Moderator, Rev. J. A. M'Kenzie, presided. In a report covering the reception of immigrants, tho Moderator said that ho personally had interviewed a number of immigrants who arrived in Wellington last Saturday by the s.s. Shropshire. There were very few Scots folk aboard tho vessel, but a largo number of Irish. To his mind it was desirable to meet immigrant vessels, even though it might bo found that not much assistance could lie afforded. The committee on immigration deemed it wise not to approach the Government in regard to the reception of immigrants, since a meeting was about to be called shortly of representatives of various churches interested in the matter. He wns in touch with the Church of England Men’s Society on the subject, and a sub-committee had received instructions to represent the Presbytery at tho. forthcoming conference. ' Arrangements were authorised for the disposal of the site for tho proposed church at Day’s Bay. Tho secretary to St. Andrew s Church wrote, submitting tiio following two projects for approval: (1) Permission to proceed with a- portion of tho new chinch and to reinstate the hall; (2) for authority to borrow £lO6O from the Church Trustees, who hold a mortgage of £1555 for the Church Board. It was desired to borrow £9OO on this security for the purpose of completing payment of the new manse. The plans and financial questions raised were referred to the Building and Finance Committee, with power to act. at the same time surprise was expressed by several members nt the fact that the manse had cost £6OOO. At the suggestion of Dr. Gibb, it wadecided to discuss at the next meeting of the Presbytery proposals for the suggested basis of union between the Congregation and Presbyterian Churches oi New Zealand.
