WAIRARAPA NOTES

The annual report of the- Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association states that .the total membership is now 1091. One hundred new members were enrolled during the year, and fifty members were received on transfer from other associations. while fifty members were lost on outward transfer. A loss of -£194- has been incurred on unpaid subscriptions. Regarding Sponsions, the report states that during the year numerous complaints have been received from members regarding ths inadequacy of their war pensions. These cases have been taken up and brought to the notice of the Pensions Department. In numerous cases allowances have been increased on the. basis of injuries received, and in several instances permanent pensions have been assessed. The committee appreciated the courteous attention paid to its correspondence by the officials of the Pensions Department. The report goes on to say that the demand for house properties by returned men has been very brisk, and much information on tho subject has boon imparted to inquirers through the offices of tho association. Endloss application form? have been completed, and advice given as to tho Government scheme of purchase. Unfortunately, from tho soldier s point of view, the Crown Lands Department, hoe discontinued the policy of advancing loans for the purchase of ready-built houses, tvs this system did not tend to ease tlie housing problem throughout the country. The Department, however, still makes a point of lending sums up to .£ll5O for the purchase of land and the erection of dwellings thereon, and endless inquiries have been answered, and useful information detailed to enable returned men to take advantage of the eyetom. ■ . Following are the particulars of patient a treated in hospitals under tho jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board during the month of MarchMasterton Hospital: Admissions 52; discharges, 47; deaths, 2; remaining at end of month, 57.
