THE MISHAP TO THE SUSSEX
After a voyage of five months the steamer Sussex, of the Federal Steam Navigation Company’s fleet, arrived at Auckland from Cardiff via ports on Wednesday afternoon. The vessel left Bristol on November 3 aftter lla ving loaded? 700 tons of iron, and proceeded to Sydney, Cap© Breton, and St. John where she completed her loading. At fho latter .port (states the Auckland "Star”) the vessel stuck for some hours on a mud bank, but with no consequences. On J anuary 3, at 11) o’clock in the evening. Colon was entered, and the Sussex ran ashore on the breakwater, where she stuck fast. In vessel at the time was in charge ot the chief officer. Cap-bin Pattmson, the master, being ill. At Panama the chief officer was replaced by Mr. Douse, of the Faikoura. In order to tow the ves el off the breakwater her cargo was discharged into lighters. At the end ot ten davs she was floated off and Rocked in the United States Government dock nt Balboa. Repairs were effected there, and the damage done necessitated the renewal of 4G plates, the keel plate to th- "J” strokes plating and frames haying been damaged on both sides. I stem was also broken and a large hole had been opened in the forehold. The yards worked night and day, a.nd rile repairs were completed in three weexs, which is considered to be smart work. Tho damage to the cargo is considerable, among the perishable cargo being newsprint paper and motor-cars. The agents have declared a general average of 8 per cent.-on the ‘actual net vholcwle arrived value.” Nearly the whole of the cargo was placed on the yesse again when her repairs were completed. The cargo for Auckland and Wellington consists of 2800 tons, while the remaining 4000 tone is for Australian ports.
