FATAL FIRE IN ALMA LANE
VERDICT AT INQUEST. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., held an inquest. yesterday morning into the circumstances causing the death of Charles Michael Smith, 68 years of age, on Tuesday night, in a fire at No. 19 Alma Lane, where the deceased, a widower, had resided with his son. The evidence showed that Smith, who was well known as a foreman for the Union Steam Ship Company, retired to bed about 7.15 p.m., and his son went to the pictures, leaving his father in bed reading a newspaper by the aid of a lighted candle.. At J.ll p.m. the premises were discovered on lire, which appeared to have started in the room occupied by deceased. Ih charred remains of deceased were found on the floor of the bedroom lying lact downwards across the doorway. The Coroner found that death • due to burns received in a fire, apparen - ly caused by deceased having left candle burning and fallen asleep.
