PERISHABLE-FOOD SHOPS
ALLEGED UNFAIR COMPETITION. Towards the end of lost session. Mr. W. JI. Field (Otaki) asked the Minister of Labour whether he would bring down legislation to define more clearly a perishable-food shop, in view of the fae.fi that these so-called perishable-food shops had become large distributors of general groceries, tobacco, etc., and had thus become unfair competitors with tho general, fitorekeepers and tobacconist/;, who were compelled to close according to the Shops and Offices Acv? The Ministerial reply is as follows: “Tho desirability of doing so is recognised, and legislation io under consideration for introduction next session. _ Any storekeeper or. tolxaconist mentioned should, however, place his complaint before the Department’s inspectors, as "J m»st cast’s Hie present: Act is considered sufficient to prevent the competition referred to.”
