NO ASSISTANCE
LOCAL BODIES’ CLAIM REFUSED.
Tho Minister of Pubic Works has informed Mr. W. IT. Field, M.P., that a suggestion that assistance should bo given to local bodies in consideration of extra wear and tear on roads during the time The railway service was curtailed ha 3 been carefully considered, and it has boon decided that nothing further can be done. Mr. Field had stated, in urging the claim, that Horowhenua and Hutt Counties were conspicuous sufferers in this respect. The Main West Coast Road, a narrow metalled one, runs from end to end through these counties, and had to bear practically the whole of the traf(ic, bovh light and heavy, between Wellington and the’ Manawatu-Raugilikei and Wanganui districts, the result being that iu order to keep the road in order the time of the district rgadmen, as well a s of tho main roadmen, was fully occupied in keeping the main road open. The additional cost amounted to some thousands of pounds, and tho district roads had to remain neglected.
