LANDLORDS AND CHILDREN
SUGGESTED LEGISLATION. The following quetions were asked of the Minister of Labour by Mr. Fraser (Wellington Central) during the recent session of Parliament:—(l) Has the Minister’s attention been drawn to clauses 17b and 17c of the Fair Renta Amendment Act(, 1920, of New South Wales, which read:—l7b. Any person who refuses to let a dwelling to any respectable and responsible applicant who has a child or children shall bo liable to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds: Provided that in any prosecution under this section it ehall bo susffiscient defence to show that such refusal was not due to the fact fliat the applicant had a child or children. 17c. Any person who £) instructs an agent not to let, or (2) states his intention, whether by advertisement or otherwise, not to le£ a dwelling-house to any person who has o child or children, shall be Hable to a penality not exceeding fifty pounds 12) Will the Minister introduce similar legislation? The Minister of Labour has now replied: "This matter will receive coneideration, as the Government has the fullest sympathy with the position of families in this connection. Preference is being given under the Housing Act to appli ants with large families and those u idw order of eviction, and about tnirty cases hove been so dealt with in Wellington recently.”
