STEAMERS COLLIDE
PASSENGER LINER SUNK ALL HANDS BELIEVED TO BE SAFE (By Telegraph-Press Assoc'.ation-Oopyrlrlil (Rec. April 1, 11.20 p.m.) New York, April 1. The passenger steamer Governor, of the Admiral Line, bound from San Francisco to Seattle, came into collision with the steamer West Hartland from Vancouver to Bombay, off Port Townsend (Washington). The Governor sank in 25 minutes. The passengers took to the lifeboats. Steamers are racing to the rescue. Later. The WAt Hartland was rammed by the Govern t, but is comparatively uninjured. She is standing by. The collision took place at midnight in a fog., The whole of the 270 passengers and the crew of tho Governor are believed to be safe in the boats.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
[The Governor was a twin-screw steamer of 5475 tons gross, and wasbui.lt in 1907. The West Hartland is a turbine steamer of 6177 tons gross, and was built in 1919.]
