FLEET MOURNS

SERVICE AT SEA IN MEMORY OF K 5.

London, March 21

There was a moving ceremony at sea 100 miles off the Scilly Isles yesterday afternoon, when 14,000 officers and men of the Atlantic Fleet, returning from the spring cruise, participated in a solemn service in memory of their comrades of the submarine K 5, which foundered with all hands in that spot n year ago. An Admiralty announcement describes the force as of six battleships, two battlecruisers, six light cruisers, 17 destroyers, and an aircraft carrier, under the orders of Vice-Admiral Sir gidney Fremantle. It approached the scene of the disaster in an imposing formation. After the fleet had stopped its engines as far as the typical sea-going weather would admit, the colours were flown at half-mad, and ft memorial service was held aboard the flagship, the Revenge. The rest of the fleet held funeral services, and well-known hymns were sung. An aeroplane meantime circled round the fleet, despite the difficult flying conditions, and after a party of 100 seamen on the Revenge had fired the three customary vollevs the Last Post was sounded, and “Land of Hope and Glory” was played as the officers and men left the quarter-deck. The ceremony terminated in the hoisting of the colours, and tnr fleet resumed its cruising dispositions, proceeding up the Channel homewards. Reuter. .
