PEONAGE SYSTEMS
CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE
THE CHARGES AGAINST THE WILLIAMSES
(By Telograph-Prees Aasoolatlon-Oopyriihl
Atlanta, March 31,
The outstanding features of tho peonage situation are that there will be a Congressional investigation into peonage systems; a rumour that the Ku Klux Klan, whkU still exists throughout tho South, as a powerful secret organisation working along lines of retributive justice, will take up the Williamses’ cause; the preliminary organisation of vigilance committees in Jasper, Tyler, and other counties in Georgia to keep the public peace, and tho fixing of April 4 for tho trial of Williams. Mr. Williams’s eldest son, who is practising as a physician, and who fought in France and won British decorations, in the course of an interview, declared that his father is innocent, but admitted the existence of wide, spread peonage, in Jasper County.—Aus.N.Z.
