COAL HULKS FOR UNION COMPANY. The barone Dartford, at present in Auckland discharging coal, is to be converted Into a coal hulk. Some years ago the vessel was used by the Union Cfl™ - nanv as a training ship. She was aiterwards turned into a coal hulk, and during the war she was fitted out as a baroue. and for two years, under the command of Cantain Watson, she traded between Newcastle and South American ports, taking coal and bringing back American cargo. There being an abundance, of tonnage available at the present time, and this class of vessel not paying n has been decided to again convert ner into a hulk. She is thirty-four years old, but is still in good' order. Captain Watson is at present m Lvttelton. and it is understood that he will take command of the barque Gladbrook, relieving Cantain Corby, who has been in command of the Gladbrook since Ebe was fitted un about two years ago at Port Chalmers. There are rumours that the Gladbrook, which will leave for Suva, from Lvttelton probably towards the end of the week, after docking for cleaning and painting, will be turned into a hulk at the Islands. Another sailing craft that is being cons verted into a coal hulk for the TTnion Company is the lima, which is undergoing the change here. RAMA FROM CHATHAMS. The Rama, which arrived shortlv after midnight, encountered the full force of yesterday’s sudden storm on her voyage from the Chatham Islands. Leaving Owenga at about 6.30 on Sunday morning, the Rama almost immediately ran into strong notherlv winds, which increased m violence as the vessel neared the coast. Early yesterday morning a fierce gale was encountered, and at f° ur °. C '°£,'S afternoon it was at its height. The Ba’bO' was four hours rounding Cane Pallißer. Mountainous seas were running but sne shipped nothing but spray. She proved herself an excellent sea-boat throughout the trip. The Rama, which is commanded by Captain E. Cartner, brought six, «XSBpngers and some 700 cases and fish for Wellington. She also has a Quantity of wool for Lyttelton, and will Bail for the southern- port to-day. BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS. ' The sudden storm yesterday caused a small amount of disorganisation amongst the local fleet. The Putiki a lid Waitemata, both went to Miramar during the afternoon. but were unable to berth at toe wharf there and were forced to return. The Putiki will load coke there for Na, pier and East Coast bays to-day. Both the Karamu and the Kennedy, which left port in the morning, Jater. me Karamu sailed aaain shortlv after 8 p.m., and the Kennedy was expected to get away later. The Rama, from Chatham Islands. was also delayed by the storm. NEW SCALES PURCHASE. G. H. Beales. Ltd., have added o-rother vessel to their well-known sailing fleet, which includes the barques and Rona and the barauentine Isabel by the purchase of the Alice A. Leigh. Thia baroue has fust been docked and overhauled at Sydney, and will probably load at Newcastle for New Zealand. From here she will go to the United Kingdom With Vf The Alice A. Leigh is a four-masted steel baraue of 2999 tons gross and 2817 tons net. She was built in 1«89 at Whitehaven bv the Whitehaven S.B. Company, Ltd. Her .principal dimensions are:-Lo”«-h. 3093 ft.: breadth, 46.1 ft.: and uepth. 25J)ft. COAL SHIPMENTS. Within the next days a number of coal shipments will reach Wellington. The Koromiko is due from Newcastle at noon to-dav. She has general cargo as well as coal.' The Waipori is due to-morrow from Grevmouth. the Kini to-day from Greyrnouth, and the Kakapo from Greymouthon Monday. In addition the karamu will return here from Greymouth, and the Komata will probably have coal aboard from Westport. She is due to-morrow.

TE ANAU FOR CHATHAM ISLANDS. The Te Anau. which is being fitted out at Port Chalmers for carrying sheen, will probablv be leaving for the Ghatham Islands in a day or two to convev sheep to Lyttelton (savs an exchange). The date of her departure will, to some extent, oenend on information arriving from the Islands (ner wireless) as to whether the sheep, which, were liberated on account of the recent waterside > trouble, have been mustered again for shipment.

TAHITI DUE TO-MORROW. According to a wireless message received by the Union Company, the Tahiti is due earlv to-morrow afternoon from San Francisco. The Tahiti is timed to sail on t'w; return trip to Ban Francisco on March 38.

TO LOAD AT NEW YORK. Besides the West loskin, which is loading at New York for New Zealand and Australian ports, the U.S. and A. steamer West Wind is also to load there. Her New Zealand ports will probably ho Auckland and Wellington. ZEALANDICIS MOVEMENTS The S.S. and A. liner Zealandic will not get away for Lyttelton until Tuesday. and conseauently she will not leav.s the southern port for London until April 2. OTAKI AT NEW YORK. Tho Otaki. which left Wellington on February 8. is reported as having arrived at New York on March 10. OVERSEAS STEAMERS DUE. Two overseas steamers are due from Auckland on Thursday. These are the Crosby Hall, to tho agency qf the S .8. and A. Line, and tho Waimate. for which the New Zealand Shipping Company are agents. TREYLN DELAYED. The Federal Line advise that tho Treyion has been delaved, and will be unable to sail for Lvttelton and Dunedin now until Saturday. THE EAST COAST SERVICE. The Kanna, due to-dny. from Lvttelton, will sail this evening for Auckland. The Katoa. from Auckland. Gisborne, and Napier, is due on Friday, and will not sail for Lvttelton until Tuesday. MANUKA FOR SYDNEY. The Union Company’s rteamer Manuka Is due to-dav from Lyttelton, and is to sail at 6 n.m. to-morrow for Svdnev. RUAPEHU’S LOADING PORTS. Port Chalmeks. Bluff. Lvtteltom sind Wellington will be the loading norts for the Ruanehu. at present at the first-men-tioned port. She is timed to leave ther.s on March 29 ' for Bluff, is due here on April 8. and should sail six days later for London. OROWATI LAUNCHED. The Orowati. built to tho order of the New Zealand BUipplng Company, was launched bv the Greenock Dockyard Company, Ltd.. Greenock, recently (says an exchange). The Oro'yati is nn oil-tank steamer of 7000 tons and will ha.ve engines bv Messrs. J. G. Kincaid and Company. Greenock. ARAHURA AND MAPOURIKA. Tho Arahura is due to-day from Lyttelton. nnd will sail a.t noon to-morrow for Picton. She will arrive back in the evening in time to sail at 10.30 n.m. for Nelson, where she will remain on Good Friday. The Mapourika is to sail to-night as usual for Nelson, returning on Friday morning. She will sail at noon on Saturday for Picton and Nelson. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr A. Addie, second engineer of the Ripple, has left that ship. Mr. R, Cornish joining In his stead. i Mr. R. A. A wireless message from the Kaiifianawa. ntated that the vessel is due to arrive at Dunedin this morning from Newcastle. The John arrived at Dunedin yesterday from Wellington. She is to load for Wellington at Dunedin. Oamaru. and Timaru. The departure of the Garbeta for Newcastle to load for New Zealand has been postponed until to-dav. The Langton Hall should sail on Saturday week for Brisbane. The Corinna will go to Lyttelton. Nelson, and New Plymouth after she has visited Dunedin. Oamaru. and Timaru. The Kahika is due from Dunedin. Oamaru. and Timaru next Monday. The Karu will go from Wanganui to Tarakohe and thence to New Plymouth, returning to Tarakohe to load for Wellington. She is due here early next month.

The Port Natal, which withdrew for overhaul after discharging Newcastle coal recently, will have new masts fitted before she leaves Port Chalmers. Two of her three old masts were removed bv the sheerlegs on Saturday preparatory to stepping the new ones.

With timber and general cargo from Greymouth and Westport, the Rosamond is expected in port on Friday. The haroue Rona has been unable to sail for Newcastle on account of the state of the weather. The Wanaka is due from When ear el and Nanier on Tuesday with cement. The Hororata and Pakeha both sailed for London last evening. The auxiliary schooner Huia is due today from Auckland and Napier. She has pnwder on board.

Messrs. Reece Bros.’ new steamer Opua is due here to-dar from Lyttelton.
