MASTER CARRIERS
ANNUAL MEETING OF UNION.
The annual meeting of the Wellington General Carriers and Customhouse and Forwarding Agents’ Industrial Union of Employers was held last! night, Mr. G. B. Christie presiding. The chairman eulogised the splendid progress which had been made since the uniim had been re-formed. Among th® many notable improvements which had been effected at the suggestion of the union were the abolition of the practice of turning away vehicles from the goods yards at the railway stations before noon, and the better srghting facilities now in vogue ati Thorndon station. Improved telephonic communications had been arranged at tho goods yard at Thorndon, and delivery of perishabls goods might now be obtained after 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The goods yard at Lambton had been remetalled and generally reconditioned, and better cranage facilities had been arranged for, ensuring quicker dispatch and a considerable saving in storage. In addition representations had resulted in many "on request” stopping places in the city being altered tb compulsory stops. The union was also instrumental in having the "zone” system of receiving cargo at t*re wharves instituted, with beneficial Jesuits to carriers and the public. The following matters were at present being investigated Provision for placing awnings over the Ddnnevirke, Palmerston North, and Alain Trunk doors at the Lambton goods yard.; various improvements relative to conditions on the wharves; and the question of vehicle licenses for Petone, Lower Hutt, and Upper Hutt. In regard tb licenses, it was considered most unjust that carriers should be compelled to pay for licenses in the foregoing districts over and above the license* paid for all vehicles in Wellington.
The report and balance-sheet 1 were adopted. The following officers were appointed for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. T. A. Munt; vice-president, Mr. D. M'Gowan; treasurer, Mr. F. Ross; auditors. Messrs. H. F. Allen and Son; committee, Messrs. J. AVilcox, A. Smith, I. Williams, A. A. Donaldson, D. Campbell, J. J. Curtis, and R. M. Griffiths.
