BAND CONTEST

CONCLUDING COMPETITIONS.

The band contest, extending over a week, concluded on Saturdey afternoon with a. quickstep competition at Trafalgar Fork, in the presence of one of Tffi* biggest crowds seen, locally. Nelson’s claim to being the “city of sunshine” was fully maintained until this afternoon. when ft few showers fell, the rest of tho week being beautifully fine. Tho four test selections were played in. tho open air in the evening under ideal weather conditions. All the functions were largely attended, nineteen bands competing.

Mr. Sweney, supervisor, says this was the biggest contest held in the Dominion with tho exception of the Christchurch Exhibition contest, and that it was the happiest ho ever attended. The final demonstration took place this evening, and the prizes won were presented by Dr. Thacker, president of the South Island Brass Band Association.

The quickstep results were:—lnvercargill Hibernian, 280 points, 1; Woolston, 272, 2; Auckland Garrison, 270, 3. Nineteen bands competed. The Booscy trophy for the bigheet aggregate marks in the A grade contest was won by the Woolston Band, and tne Boosey trophy for the highest marks in tho B grade was won by tho Ashburton Band (Eighth South Canterbury Mounted Rifles). In the finals in the A grade contest the Woolston Bra-ss Band won by nine points. It received n. great ovation. The judge complimented the winners and the next two bands—lnvercargill Hibernian and St. Kilda—who tied for second place, on their fins performance. Tho details are: —

Auckland City, 120, 123 —243; Auckland Garrison, 119—239; Napier City, 118, 116—234.
