THE “SOCIALIST RELIGION”
<A REQUEST TURNED DOAVN,
The Finance and Property Committee recommended to the City Council last night that the request of the New Zealand Socialist Party for an extension of its permit to hold open-air meetings, be not accccded to.
Councillor - J. Glover objected to the recommendation of the committee. He could not see why the Socialist Party could not have permission to address ineetings on Sunday nights. Councillor AL F. Ltickie: No other political body calls meetings on Sunday night. It is not a matter of religion. Councillor Glover: “These people call Socialism their religion.” Councillor Glover contended that the Socialists were entitled to their opinion, and he moved that the recommendation of the committee be not adopted. Councillor C. 11. Chapman seconded the motion. The Mayor (Air. J. P. Luke): Councillor Glover has said that these people call Socialism their religion. All I can say is, "God help New Zealand if that is going to be the religion established in New Zealand.” The motion was defeated, and the recommendation was adopted.
