SAND DRIFT AT LYALL BAY
REPORT BY CITY ENGINEER
Tn connection with a proposal to exert the provisions of the Sand Drift Act, 1903,' the following memorandum from the city engineer was placed before the City Council nt last evening’s meeting:— "An inspection made 'by me shows that opposite section 58 on the tracing the sand accumulates during southerly weather, and is blown off the beach. With a view to getting over (ho trouble at this particular spot, I am erecting a brushwood fence, similar to what was done opposite Mr. Odlin’s property, Island Bay, to prevent the drift referred to. It is early yet to see what the result may be, but at this particular spot the drift is more pronounced than elsewhere. The sand on sections eastward of Onepu Hoad is-also provocative of great trouble. These sections, previous to subdivisions, contained a large amount of drift sand, and it is considerably disturbed during loth southerly and northerly weather, in addition to which children playing about on these sandhills disturb the surface and prevent any vegetable growth becoming effective in keeping the sand in position. "I understand that under the Act the Minister of Lands will have a scheme prepared and filed in the Court for controlling the sand-drift and apportion the cost amongst the several owners in the area, proclaimed. . . • The nuisance is pronounced, being detrimental to private properties, and, in addition, the snn<l Hocks the drains and sewers in this particular area.” The matter waa left in the hands of th® city engineer..
