MUNICIPAL HOUSING
THE COUNCIL’S POLICY. "I would like to know the policy of the council in regard to the purchase of land for housing,” stated Councillor T. Forsyth at last night’s meeting of the City Council. Councillor Forsyth wanted to know what land the council had procured and how it was being disposed of. He also desired to know what steps the Housing Committee were taking to make the municipal housing scheme a success, or whether it was going to quit the whole thing and dispose of the land. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) said the question was very pertinent. The council heeded to gome to a decision whether or not it was going to proceed with the proposed, two. garden, villages. "I do not think the council should get very much concerned,” remarked Mr. Luke. "Things will right themselves.” The property at Khandallnh would make a splendid gardent village—the most up-to-date thing of its kind in New Zealand. The acquisition near Wilton's Bush would be a good paying concern. There was nothing that the council need regret in. regard to housing. Councillor Forsyth: Is the Wilton’s Bush land let now?
The Mayor: Yes, it is let' for grazing in the meantime.
The housing superintendent (Mr. R. M'Kenzio) reported 1 that since his Inst report the outside of house number 14 had been finished, and the house was now ready for the scrim and paper. The house on section 19 was .now covered outside, and he expected to have the roof on this week.
